#NABJHBCYou Training Day Summary

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is proud to host the Second Annual NABJ HBCYou Training Day on Feb. 25, 2023. The NABJ HBCYou Training Day is the largest annual outreach program for the NABJ HBCU Initiative. 

This event is open to students at all colleges, not just HBCUs. The initiative also is designed to encourage alumni of HBCUs to give back by establishing or reinvigorating NABJ chapters at HBCUs across the country.

The 2023 NABJ HBCYou Training Day offers a daylong, virtual event where students can find jobs and internships and connect with media professionals to get training in journalism and communications.

The NABJ HBCYou Training Day includes:

- An all-day job and internship fair with opportunities from our sponsors/partners

  • Sports Jobs Behind the Camera | Powered by Bally Sports - In this panel, we take a look at other jobs in journalism besides being an anchor or reporter. Bally Sports shows you some of the job opportunities they have and what you can do to land a gig.

10 a.m. - Second Sessions

  • Producing 101: Getting Your Foot in the Door - It’s a job that a lot of people don’t know about, but it is one of the highest in-demand jobs in journalism: TV news producing. Our panel gives you tips on how to apply for this job using the skills you already have and what you need to succeed.
  • How to Earn a Scholarship - Gabrielle McCormick owns and operates Scholarship Informer. McCormick has won more than $250,000 in scholarship money. In this workshop, she gives you tips on how you can find the best scholarships to cover the cost of school.
  • The Art of Sports Reporting - Writing for sports takes skill, patience and experience. We show you how to score some points with your editors while keeping your voice, tone and personality in your writing intact.

  • Writing for Broadcast | Powered by Nexstar Media Group - Want to learn the basics of writing a script for broadcast? Nexstar Media Group will show you how to polish your copy and make the words sing.
  • Digital Game: How to Thrive Covering Sports in an Age of Instant Communication - Reporters are being asked to do more, especially in the digital arena. With journalism constantly evolving, we show you ways to keep up with the fast-paced environment of sports reporting.

12 p.m. - Power Up Lunch with DeMarco Morgan 

  • Lunch on Your Own. Join Us for a Great Conversation!

1 p.m. - 4 p.m. - Open Job and Internship Career Fair

  • Rundown Critique - The rundown is a tool every broadcast producer uses to create a lively and riveting show. In this hands-on workshop we show you the dos and don’ts of making your show stand out from all the rest.
  • Open Locker Room: Creating a Healthy Environment for Women to Thrive in Sports - Sports reporting is a male-dominated field. We show you the way to make your mark from the sidelines to the locker room.
  • The Art of Sports Reporting  

3 p.m. - Sixth Sessions

  • Breaking News Producing - You’ve worked hard to create a show but then news breaks. What do you do? How should you handle it? During this workshop learn how you can preserve parts of your show that will still work and what you need to do to make room for breaking news.
  • Communications…There’s So Much More! (If It's Media, It’s Related!) - While reporting may be the most popular career in media, it’s not the only route you can take to become a communications professional.
  • How to Secure a Sports Internship - Landing a sports internship is one of the most coveted internships around. It’s also one of the hardest internships to get with limited opportunities. But hard is not impossible. Learn how you can make your application stand out from the rest.
